Fall is a lot of people’s favorite seasons–and for good reason! The leaves are changing colors, the weather is crisp and cool, football is back, the seasonal drinks are amazing….but personally, what I love the most about fall is that I have the best excuse ever to have a cozy night in (not that I need one during a pandemic)!
I am an introvert by nature, and by the end of a hectic week, my absolute favorite way to wind down is to have a “me” day (or maybe even a me weekend if I really need it). This doesn’t happen too often since I do need to devote time to my friends and family, but those days where I can clear my entire schedule and just focus on myself are so special and so, so NEEDED!

Turn Off Your Phone
This might be the hardest part of taking a “me day” for a lot of people, but I assure you it is the step that will make you feel the absolute best!
I have to say that for someone in their twenties, I’m really good at just not looking at my phone or conveniently forgetting it in another room. Being too attached to your phone can be stressful, and sometimes you don’t feel like you’re actually taking much of a break when you’re still so connected to the outside world!
Do yourself a favor and just turn it off for an evening. Or if you really can’t manage that, at least put it on silent. This is the perfect way to put yourself in the mindset that you are taking an evening to focus on yourself!
Music, Music, Music!
I personally take DJ-ing for myself incredibly seriously. I have playlists for every mood–getting ready in the morning, winding down in the evening, music for while I work…you name it! So of course I have some favorite choices for those nights when I am shutting off my phone and having some serious me-time.
I mentioned this in my post about my favorite ways to increase productivity while I work from home, but I have a serious love for instrumentals and ambient music that can be found all over Youtube! My personal favorites tend to be instrumentals from some of my favorite movies…usually Disney movies from when I was a kid. You can choose piano renditions, lo-fi, or whatever you’re in the mood for. Seriously, check them out if you haven’t already!
Another favorite genre (if you can call it that) for self-care days is definitely early to mid-2000s pop and punk music….don’t judge!
The Softest Throw Blanket
Alright, everyone has to admit that you couldn’t possibly have a cozy night in without a soft throw blanket! Even during the height of summer I am still the comfiest when I’m wrapped in a throw blanket. I have a literal Mount Everest of throw blankets in my living room, and it’s just never enough!
So grab your favorite blankie for your next night in. Or if you don’t already have one, do yourself a favor and buy one that will feel like being wrapped in the softest cloud! I linked a few of my favorites above….the Barefoot Dreams one is so amazing. It’s one that I gift to my family and friends all the time, and it’s always met with resounding success! But if you’re on a budget, this grey one from Target is actually one of my all-time favorite blankets and so affordable!
Candles in Your Favorite Scent
Does anyone else have a particular scent that just feels incredibly nostalgic? For me, it’s some combination of apple and cinnamon. I just smell that and it takes me back to spending the holidays with my family baking apple pies (and stealing all of the apple slices from the bowl while they soak in the cinnamon sugar….YUM).
So, the best way to set the mood for a comfy night in is to find that scent that really makes you feel at ease! Personally, I am super picky about candles. I don’t want any scents that smell too artificial–it has to smell like someone is baking something delicious in my home!
These candles from Target definitely fit the bill! I spend copious amounts of time sniffing candles in stores (At least, pre-COVID), so I know what I like, and these candles are great! I am peesonally a fan of sweet scents, so if those are not your thing then maybe skip these.
Cute and Comfy Pajamas
Traditionally, I have always been the type of girl to throw on a giant t-shirt and some shorts for bedtime. However, when I hit my mid-twenties, I had a revelation that getting a cute pajama set just makes you feel SO GOOD! There’s something about putting on a cute pair of pjs before tucking into bed that just makes me feel like such an adult!
I am a huge fan of the pajama options at Nordstrom. If you have a little bit more wiggle room in your budget, you will definitely be able to find some great pajama sets there that are soft and cute! I love the Moonlight sets–they come in long sleeve, short sleeve, and nightshirt varieties as well as so many colors!
Amazon and Target are my favorite places to find affordable PJ sets that are still cute and flattering. Check out my picks above and treat yourself to something cute to wear while you relax!
Your Favorite Robe
I never used to be a robe person, but after finally biting the bullet and splurging on a nice one for myself, I have been IN LOVE. I am officially a robe girl now! It’s what I put on first thing in the morning and when I am winding down for the night!
I bought the Ugg robe that I linked above, and even though it is definitely pricey, I think that it is so worth it! First of all, you don’t need a ton of robes–just one! I wear this one pretty much every day and have done so for nearly two years. So if you want to splurge a bit to treat yourself, I highly recommend this one! Otherwise, I did include a few more affordable picks for anyone who is on the fence about robes.
Wrapping yourself in a warm robe is the best way to fully get in the mindsight of a cozy night in, so go ahead and treat yourself to something you’re going to look forward to wrapping yourself in every night!
Your Ultimate Activity for De-stressing
The key to a cozy night in is treating yourself to so uninterrupted time with your favorite activity. It could be drawing, playing video games, reading…anything that will set your mind at ease and bring you joy!
I have heard that people who suffer from anxiety tend to find the most relief in watching television shows or movies from their childhood. It eliminates the possibility of spending time watching something you dislike and you find the ultimate comfort in something familiar–like a warm blanket for your soul!
That’s probably why my personal favorite way to de-stress is playing a video game from my childhood (pretty much always Kingdom Hearts) or re-reading one of my favorite books (Pride and Prejudice, anyone?). If you have a Nintendo Switch and haven’t tried them already I highly recommend Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley if you need something to chill with. Those games relax my anxiety-ridden soul like none other.
The goal of a cozy night in is to relax and treat yourself to an activity that you enjoy. So pick an activity for your night that you know will be calming and fun! I linked a few of my favorite, quiet de-stressing activities above.
A Notebook to Write Down Your Thoughts
A cozy night in is all about unwinding, and I personally think that one of the best ways to unwind is to literally pour all of my thoughts onto paper.
I am not great at being consistent with it, but I do find that journaling is an incredible habit, and a great way to get in tune with your own thoughts and feelings. Personally, journaling really helps me gather my thoughts together when I am having a hard time vocalizing my feelings. It’s a fantastic tool for introverts or anyone who may be a little bit shy!
I find that writing my thoughts down first gives me a lot of clarity and helps me open up a bit more to those around me because I already have a firm grasp of my emotions that may have felt a bit confused and muddled before. So the next time you feel like you’re in need of a mental health day, pull out a pen and paper and jot your feelings down! You will probably feel so much better afterwards!
You don’t need to have a full banquet ala The Rock’s famous cheat meals, but treat yourself to a delectable treat or just some take out from your favorite restaurant! This is honestly my favorite way to give myself a reward at the end of a stressful week.
For anyone who is trying to keep to a healthy diet–first of all, that’s amazing! Keep it up! My favorite treat that I think is relatively clean is apple slices with peanut butter. YUM!
I also love to bake for myself, funnily enough. I have so many cookbooks filled with yummy recipes; sometimes it’s fun to put in a little bit of effort for yourself rather than someone else! So make yourself some cookies or brownies and enjoy!
A Hot Beverage
What’s your hot beverage of choice? Mine is definitely tea. Nothing relaxes me more than a tall mug of tea (either earl grey or caramel if I want something sweet) with a splash of milk. It’s just so comforting and invigorating….the perfect beverage for a cozy fall evening!
So if you’re a tea person, grab your favorite tea. If you like coffee or anything else, go for it! Nothing says “cozy” quite like a warm beverage!
A Cute Mug For Your Beverage
I mean, if you’re going to get the beverage, you might as well have something cute and Instagram-worthy to drink it out of! I am a bit of a mug hoarder and have a ton of fun finding seasonal options to put my drinks in. Look how cute these Amazon finds are! Don’t they make you want to curl up on the sofa with some hot chocolate? They definitely give me that feeling!
I think that the most difficult part of really focusing on skincare is carving out enough time to dedicte to it! That’s why a night in is the best opportunity to treat your skin to some treatments that you wouldn’t do on a daily basis.
My favorite example of this is applying one of my favorite face masks! I linked a few of my personal favorites above; they are all amazing for any skin type, but they do a particularly great job of hydrating my dry skin. And the best part is that these are as effective as they are affordable!
If you are l1ooking for some great sheet masks, I have been loving Facestory and Blanc Therapy masks! I find that my skin is absolutely glowing when I use one of these, and I epecially love to hoose a mask that features an ingredient that will focus on whatever skin problem I want to try to tackle. For example, a tea tree oil mask is amazing for fighting acne while avocado is incredibly moisturizing on dry skin.
The rose mask that I linked above is another one of my favorites lately. If you have skin that is easily irritated, I implore you to try this one out! It is a jelly mask, so it is incredibly soothing on the skin. And the added rose is another great ingredient for calming your skin–not to mention it smells amazing!
Lastly, I linked my current favorite undereye patches. When you use these, you pretty much have to relax; I find that they slide right down my face if I’m not reclining! These patches feel cooling on your skin and use good ole snail mucin to hydrate, depuff, and firm up your under eyes! I love using these on nights when I Really need to relax; they feel amazing on your skin and leave you looking so awake and youthful!
I may be the only one but I am really sensitive about artificial light in my house. During the day, I REALLY hate having the lights on, and at night I only want warm, yellow light. If it’s bright, white lights, I get bad headaches and they just feel too harsh.
My favorite way to create a cozy environment i my home is by adding some string lights that provide some warm light. That way, I can turn off the lights and be surrounded by a comforting glow. I linked my absolute favorite string lights above!
I have purchased some string lights that don’t last long or smell like burning plastic when you plug them in….these are perfect! And they don’t give off any harsh light–this is the perfect string of warm lights for a cozy night in!
The Best Bubble Bath
A bubble bath is something that I don’t treat myself to very often, but every time I do I feel so much better afterward! I especially love to choose a comforting scent to add to the bath that will really put me in a relaxed state. My personal favorite is either rose or lavender, but there are so many different scent to choose for any kind of mood! I linked a few of my favorite bath products above in my favorite scents. These are the scents that I gravitate towards when I need some serious stress relief in my life!
The best way to cap off a nice, long bubble bath is by using your favorite exfoliating product to make your skin feel soft and smooth. A cozy night in requires some pampering, and you want to emerge from your self-care day feeling fresh and rejuvenated!
I find that exfoliating is the step in my normal shower routine that I tend to skip if I’m in a rush, so I really try to incorporate this into my routine when I am giving myself a full-on day of pampering!
A Furry Companion!
And last but absolutely not least: a furry cuddle buddy to spend your night in with! My little dog is an absolute demon when it’s time to play, but when it’s time to cuddle….LOOK OUT!
There’s something about having a little animal companion that really completes a night in. You’re not totally alone, but they also won’t complain that we are watching another marathon of 90 Day Fiance (I can’t help it; those people are just beautiful messes). My doggo sees a lap, and he is pretty much magnetized to it; the perfect partner for a cozy night in! And if you don’t have a pet, no worries! Grab your favorite stuffed animal or a cozy pillow; anything for snuggling and you’re golden!
Is anyone else looking forward to staying in as much as I am? I know that we’ve al technically been staying in a lot lately due to the pandemic, but making the conscious decision of “I’m staying in and treating myself tonight” feels so much better than just being forced to stay inside. Let me know your favorite activity for a cozy night in or your favorite way to treat yourself during the fall! And happy pampering!
