How to Build A Capsule Wardrobe for Fall
When I first heard the term, ‘capsule wardrobe’, I have to admit that I was baffled. The question of how to build a capsule wardrobe on a budget seemed incredibly elusive to me. I understood the appeal of buying only a few, quality pieces to cut down on the amount of clothes in my closet, but al of the guides I saw online were telling me to spend thousands of dollars on high-quality pieces! Not exactly in my college student budget at the time!
But the truth is that building a capsule wardrobe on a budget is so, so easy! You just need to be smart about what you buy and where you buy it.
So how do you start a capsule wardrobe? First, you need to establish your base, and that base will really depend on your personal style. Do you prefer more casual looks or more dressy looks? Do you work a full-time office job or are you a student? Your capsule wardrobe needs to suit your lifestyle; they need to be versatile pieces that can be applied to any facet of your life!
Right now, I work from home, so I really only need casual, comfy clothing for the fall. I know that if I buy nice blouses or slacks I just will not wear them! So try to keep your lifestyle in mind when building that capsule wardrobe
What’s In My Fall Target Capsule Wardrobe?
The capsule wardrobe that I picked (just hang in there, you’ll see it in a sec!) is made of twelve pieces in total– three tops, three bottoms, two outerwear pieces, one dress, and two shoes. That’s very minimalistic! I’d say that a safe bet is to aim for 15-20 pieces in your capsule wardrobe for each season. You just want to make sure you’re covering all your bases–make sure that you have something to wear for a date night, a family dinner, a casual picnic….whatever you think will come up this fall!
Let’s get down to it, shall we? Here are my picks for a fall capsule wardrobe found entirely at Target!

What Kinds of Outfits Can I Make?
The key to a great capsule wardrobe is picking basics that can be matched into many different outfits, and that is exactly what I have done with this one! Take a look at all of these pieces…how many outfits do you see? Just taking a quick glance, I could make at least twenty which is exactly the goal of a capsule wardrobe!
Here are a few examples:

This is a cute, casual fall outfits. I mentioned this in my post about fall fashion essentials, but I think that light wash straight-legged jeans are an absolute MUST for fall. And they pair perfectly with a white t-shirt and sneakers–two more fall fashion staples. This outfit is perfect for a walk in your neighborhood or a coffee date with friends!

This next outfit is a little more dressy than the last one. I love slip dresses for the fall, and a great way to wear them during the colder months is to layer it on top of a turtleneck like this while one! I also decided to pair it with the sneakers because I didn’t include heels in this capsule wardrobe and I personally love wearing sneakers with dresses! My feet dislike heels–none of them are even slightly comfortable; so I always try to pair dresses with sneakers or flats like these!

This last look is another casual look that reeks of Fall. I love a good cardigan, and this color block sweater is so great for this time of year! These straight-legged jeans are so on-trend right now. It’s a silhouette that is easy to wear and comfortable! I am also a huge fan of these taupe booties. Target is seriously killing it with their shoes this year! It’s such a fantastic place to stock up on some seasonal boots and sneakers if you’re on a strict budget.
And if your outfits are feeling a little stale, do not be afraid to accessorize! You don’t need to spend tons of money on a brand new fall wardrobe–just a few basic pieces that can easily be mix-and-matched is all you need!
